September 2026 is the start of Chennai's festive run-up. Krishna Jayanthi opens the month on the 4th with Parthasarathy Temple at its busiest, Vinayagar Chaturthi on the 14th fills every street with pandals before the immersion processions to Marina Beach, and Navaratri shopping starts early as Golu doll stalls take over Mylapore. The Yellow Line, meanwhile, is still waiting on its inauguration date.
The Big Stories
Vinayagar Chaturthi on 14 September
Chennai's biggest street festival of the year. Community pandals go up in every locality from Triplicane to Ambattur, Kosapet's clay-idol workshops run flat out in the weeks before, and the immersion processions to Marina, Pattinapakkam, and Neelankarai beaches roll on for several days after the 14th. Expect road closures along the processional routes.

FestivalKrishna Jayanthi on 4 September
Gokulashtami brings midnight pujas at Parthasarathy Temple in Triplicane and tiny butter-smeared footprints drawn in kolam powder from the doorstep to the puja room. Sowcarpet and Mint Street host uriyadi (Dahi Handi) pot-breaking events, and sweet shops run out of seedai and murukku by afternoon.

MetroThe Yellow Line is built, cleared, and still waiting for opening day
The first section of Metro Phase 2, the 14.6 km elevated stretch from Poonamallee to Vadapalani via Porur, cleared its safety inspections in June, but the inauguration originally expected in July has still not been scheduled. WeatherWarm and humid, with the monsoon build-up starting late in the month
Expect 26 to 35 degrees with high humidity. Evenings ease slightly compared to August, and by the last week the sky starts to turn as the northeast monsoon builds. Carry an umbrella from mid-month onwards, especially for evening pandal visits.
